While brands like SimpliSafe and Ring battle over smart home features and camera quality, Cove focuses on the fundamentals — reliable sensors, 24/7 professional monitoring, and a price point that undercuts every major competitor.

The company sells equipment directly through its website, with a guided quiz that recommends a package based on your home size and security needs. Equipment can be purchased outright or included free with a monitoring plan commitment. Installation is purely DIY — peel-and-stick sensors, a plug-in hub, and a touchscreen panel that walks you through setup.

Cove is not trying to be a smart home platform. It is a security system, and it does that job well for less money than anyone else charges. The question is whether the savings justify the trade-offs in ecosystem breadth and camera capability. We installed Cove in our test home for 45 days to find out.

The sensor quality is solid in our testing. Door/window sensors registered consistently within 1 second of opening, motion detectors covered our 15x20 foot living room without dead zones, and the environmental sensors triggered reliably when we tested them with controlled conditions. The 40 lb pet immunity on the motion detector worked — our 35 lb dog did not trigger false alarms, though we did get occasional false triggers from our 50 lb dog.

The camera lineup is where Cove falls short. Both indoor and outdoor cameras are 1080p — adequate but below the 2K resolution offered by Ring, Nest, and Arlo. Night vision is grainy beyond 20 feet, and there is no AI-powered person detection. The limitation is that it relies on WiFi only — no cellular backup — and you cannot control the system remotely through the app. You arm/disarm at the panel or with the key remote.

The Plus plan at $27.99/month adds everything you would expect from a modern security system: cellular backup, full app control, Alexa integration, camera recording, and crash & smash protection (the system sends an alert if the panel is destroyed before being disarmed). At $27.99, it is still cheaper than SimpliSafe’s Interactive plan ($29.99) and Ring Protect Pro ($20 + Ring Alarm cost).

Both plans are month-to-month. Cancel any time without penalty. Cove also offers equipment financing and free-equipment deals when you commit to a monitoring plan, which can bring the upfront cost to $0.

Installation Experience

Cove’s installation is genuinely easy — we completed a 6-sensor setup in 18 minutes. The touchscreen panel guides you through each step: connect the panel to WiFi, scan each sensor’s QR code, attach sensors with the included adhesive strips, and test each one. The panel confirms when each sensor is recognized and working.

A few notes from our experience:

• Adhesive strips hold well on smooth surfaces but struggled on textured drywall. We reinforced two sensors with additional 3M Command strips.
• Panel placement matters — the Cove panel needs to be near a power outlet and within WiFi range. There is no option for centralized hardwired placement.
• Sensor range is adequate — all sensors communicated reliably with the panel up to 100 feet through walls in our testing.
• No drilling required — every component attaches with adhesive. Renters can install and remove without damage.

Compared to SimpliSafe’s installation (22 minutes for 8 sensors in our test), Cove is slightly faster per sensor because the QR scanning process is quicker than SimpliSafe’s manual pairing. Both are significantly easier than anything from ADT or Vivint that requires a professional technician.

App & Interface

The Cove app (iOS and Android) is functional but basic. On the Plus plan, you can arm/disarm remotely, view system status, check sensor history, and receive push notifications. The interface is clean — no clutter, no unnecessary features — which some users will appreciate and others will find limiting.

What works well:

• Arm/disarm is responsive with minimal delay (1-2 seconds)
• Sensor history shows a timeline of all events with timestamps
• Push notifications are reliable and arrive within 5 seconds of an event
• System status is clear — armed, disarmed, or alarm triggered

What could be better:

• No geofencing — the app cannot auto-arm when you leave home
• Camera feeds are sometimes slow to load (5-8 seconds on our test)
• No customizable automation rules (if door opens, then turn on camera)
• Limited device management compared to Ring or SimpliSafe apps

The touchscreen panel itself is the primary interface most users will interact with daily.
